Dye-Sublimation Printing
Dye-sublimation printers allow the consumer to print photo-lab-quality pictures in the comfort of their own home. With the price of these printers going down, more and more digital-camera owners are choosing to take advantage of this technology.
Previously, the use of dye-sub printing has been limited to digital photo printing stations at department and photography stores due to the high price, but now there are similar quality dye-sub printers for consumers in the $100-500 price range, bringing dye-sublimation technology within the reach of consumers.
Major Advantages
In dye-sublimation printing, colors are not laid down as individual dots, as is done in inkjet printers. Where individual dots can be distinguished at a relatively close distance, making digital pictures look less realistic.
Ink from inkjet printers has been proven to fade immensely over time. Dye-Sub printing does not have this issue, thus is better suited for long term photographs.
Prints from dye-sublimation printers are waterproof within a very short time period of being printed.
Dye-sublimation is the quickly becoming the gold standard for photographic printing. When printing at home, nothing is as close to the look and feel of professional laboratory processing.
